Soochow University is located in the ancient city of Suzhou that is famous for its classical gardens and known as "the Paradise on Earth".

As a "State 211 Project" institution of higher education and Jiangsu provincial key comprehensive university, Soochow University has passed through one hundred years of its educational course. Originally founded in 1900, it merged Southern Jiangsu College of Culture and Education and the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Jiang Nan University in 1952 and became Southern Jiangsu Teachers' College. Later in the same year, it was renamed as Jiangsu Teachers' College. However, the location has never changed. In 1982, approved by the State Council, it was re-established as Soochow University. Then, Suzhou College of Sericulture, Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology and Suzhou Medical College merged into the University successively in 1995, 1997 and 2000. The University has developed into a first-rate provincial comprehensive institution in China with a complete coverage of all branches of learning, remarkable large enrollment and outstanding educational profits.

Soochow University now has 4 post-doctoral mobile stations, 22 doctoral programs, 84 master's programs, 23 key programs and 6 key laboratories appraised by the province or ministry authorities, and 2 national personnel training bases. The University consists of 6 campuses covering an area of 135 hectares and with 940,000 square meters of building area. The total enrollment is more than 39,000 students, including more than 28,000 graduates/undergraduates and more than 11,000 adult students of formal education. In the more than 4,150 faculty and staff members, there are 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 1,200 professors or associate professors.

In recent years, Soochow University has been active in expanding international exchange and established cooperative relationship with more than 80 colleges and universities in Japan, France, Korea, Singapore, Germany, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. In the meantime, the University is further deepening the reforms to explore effective ways to serve the development of economy and society. The teachers and students are doing their best with unprecedented verve, courage and insight to build up Soochow University into a national first-rate comprehensive university.

The dual-bachelor program of business administration is a great success of the joint effects of Athabasca University in Canada and Soochow University in China. (Please refer to www.au-su.net). This is the first program of its kind approved by the ministry of education of China. The school is located in Suzhou, a picturesque tourist city quite close to Shanghai, all the courses are taught exclusively by instructors from USA and Canada in English. The students can get two bachelor degrees, one from Athabsca University and another from Soochow University after they complete 150 credits within 4 years.
